I would like to use a feeler gauge to get back to square one and eliminate the gap as being part of the issue.When the trimmer starts and runs, replace the fuel cap with the trimmer still running. Continue to let it run for a while. If it sputters and dies with the cap on and then immediately starts and runs once the cap is removed, you most likely have a problem with the fuel tank vent.
